Congratulations to our Senior Club Champions

CAPTAIN'S CHAT

Apologies if you are getting a little bombarded with communications from me of late but we have had a busy few weeks with all the major competitions taking place.

Senior Club championships:

Yesterday, Saturday 12 February 2016, was our inaugural Senior Club Championships. A one day event for all our members over the age of 60. The badly needed rain squall midway through the day did nothing to dampen the event. Judging by the response this will become a major highlight in years to come. Did I hear someone mention a Super Senior Championship? Well, with our age demographics that might not be a too farfetched and idea. I have not played off the forward tees for years and I must say it was not a walkover: hazards suddenly came into play and the short game became more important. So I guess long is not a measure of difficulty.

Thanks again to our magician Greg Leckie and his team for keeping the course in super condition for this new event. We all appreciate the effort it takes and for protecting our major asset. Thanks also to Gavin Woodroffe for setting up a fair but challenging course. I saw a few new pin placings that had me thinking and missing, well done. Thanks also for arranging the new trophies, they are stunning. The “grab & go” as with last week’s Club Championships at halfway was great and dare I suggest we look at this as an option for all competition days going forward. Will poll you all to get your views and no doubt there will be lots of discussion.

To all our winners congratulations and well played. Below are their photographs and a list of the top players. A special well done to our new men’s senior club champion, Eddie O’Connor, who bounced back well with a win after a disastrous club championships last weekend. Never give up hope in this game. Also well done to Ricky Liebenberg who had a super round to win the men’s B division as a late entry to help fill the draw and note where he ended up in the overall standings as a B division player. Well done to Brian McLoughlin on winning the C division. The ladies were not to be outdone with Brigitte Dedekind winning the ladies trophy and getting one up on her husband Axel. The Bronze division winner was Petrina Jones, well done.

Thanks to everyone who played and contributed to a wonderful event played in good spirit and looking forward to next year when I am certain it will be a full day’s field.

Namibia & Botswana Experience:
To all of you who attended, thank you, and I hope you had an enjoyable evening. It is wonderful that our members who have talent are able to share that with us. Judging by the ooh’s and aah’s when some of the pictures came on screen they were great shots. Thanks to Geoff Buultjens and Jakes De Wet for sharing you’re their experiences with us. Another highlight of the evening was the Picanha braai prepared and cooked by another member, Brad Manson. It was a tremendous success and the meat was superb. Brad, I know how much effort you put into ensuring that this was out the top draw and what you had to go through on Friday to be there not to mention cooking over that very hot fire. Your effort is commendable and we thank you. Thanks also to his team of helpers, Willem, Karl, Alison, Pierre and Magda.

Geoff and Jakes very generously put up a number of their pictures for auction. We also had a number of magnum bottles of wine to auction with all profits to be donated to African Wild Dog Conservation. Unfortunately we did not raise anywhere near what I was hoping for but thank you to those who bid for those collectable items. These animals are in more danger of extinction than the rhino so they need all the support we can give. There are only 400 left in South Africa. If there is anyone out there reading this and would like to contribute please contact me.

Erinvale Survey Results
As you are all well aware the Erinvale Advisory Board (EAB) was formed to research and determine a vision for the future of the estate. It was decided to conduct a survey to get feedback from homeowners and golf members. Click here to view the summary of the responses from the golf part of the survey. There are two sections: the first from those who are a homeowner golf members and the second from those who are non-resident golf members. This makes for interesting reading and analysis.

The next step in the process is for the EAB to meet to compile its report for presentation to the members. This will be completed shortly.

As surveys go we got a very good response so thank you to those who took the time to respond.

Best regards,
Dean
