Captain's Chat

Greetings from Dean Tuesday, 22 November 2016

Greetings,

What a pleasure to see the course and clubhouse filling up again with the return of our overseas members for the summer season. There is certainly a buzz in the clubhouse and loads of good banter.

Loch Lomond
On Sunday 6 November we hosted six members from the internationally renowned Loch Lomond Golf Club in Scotland. These gentlemen were out on a two week golfing tour and played many of our great Cape coastal courses from The Links to Pearl Valley. I am proud to report that to a man they said that Erinvale was one of the best if not the best course they played and would all come back here again. They said that we offered the complete package from the golf course, scenery, tranquillity, hospitality and of course the magnificent sunset they experienced from our Playa’s bar. We had a team of Erinvale members play against them in a friendly on the day. Pictured below is their team.

Friday saw the last of our big corporate days, CTP, who have been with us for many years and one we appreciate not only due to its member links but because they contribute significantly to Erinvale. Not only do they spend a lot of money with us on the day they also print our club diary so a big thank you to CTP, we really appreciate your commitment to Erinvale and look forward to many more years hosting your event. The last two corporate days of 2106 are smaller events but have been held at Erinvale for many years and are also linked to members. After these two there are no corporate days until the middle of March. I know some members are not happy with us hosting corporate days but they do contribute significantly to keeping your subscriptions down and have a very positive effect on the club’s liquidity.

On Sunday 13 November we had the final round of the Winelands Estate Challenge that was held at Steenberg. This is a friendly competition that was started four years ago between De Zalze, Erinvale, Pearl Valley and Steenberg. The aim was to forge good ties and camaraderie between these clubs as they share common interests. Later Arabella was added. It was the brainchild of Pearl Valley’s Pete Richardson who was keen to get the various club’s office bearers and committee members together to share ideas and experiences. Each club gets to host the other clubs each year. Teams are made up of eight men and four women and is played as a better ball stableford. All the scores are added up and at the end of the last round the club with the most points wins the trophy. This year Erinvale competed well and finished second to Pearl Valley, our highest placing in the competition ever. Well done to those players who made themselves available throughout the year. Good luck next year.

On Saturday 12 November we held our fun competition Snobs vs Slobs. For those new members this was started way back in 2000 and was a competition between those members who lived below and above the clubhouse. It is held on a Saturday when the competition is Individual Stableford and all that happens is we average out all the stableford scores and the group with the highest average wins. Two years ago it was felt that this should be extended to include our non-resident members who won it last year. No name has been given to them so this year just before prize giving I asked around the non-resident members if they could think up a name for them that would rhyme with the initial trophy. Someone came up with Sods (nothing derogatory, more salt of the earth stuff?). Being a democracy I asked for a show of hands for acceptance and it was approved.

Dean Milbank, Esmé van der Merwe (Sods Captain), Nanette Booysen (Snobs Catain) & Lilo Wood(Slobs Captain)

This year the three Captains were our ladies pictured above and the winners were again the Sods. It was all very tight until the last few cards came in giving the Sods a narrow 1 point average victory, congratulations.

This last Saturday was our first major, the World Cup, Commemorative Cup. This competition and trophy was presented by David Gant, the developer of Erinvale in 1997. This is the event that put Erinvale on the world map. One week of worldwide TV coverage showing off the talents of the best golfers from 22 countries challenging for the coveted World Cup of Golf. The fact that it was held in SA for the first time and at a new, less than two years old, Erinvale Golf Club was due to the efforts of Gary Player who designed the course. He convinced the organising committee to bring it here and that it would be a challenge was a stroke of genius. The cherry on the cake was that it was won by Ernie Els and Wayne Westener on a record winning 20 under par (combined medal). Today we are what we are due in large to this event. It created an international demand at a time when there was huge uncertainty about the future of the country and not many people were investing in property in South Africa. I guess the rest is history and we should continue to celebrate this event. It was a beautiful sunny day but as the day wore on so did the wind that certainly played a hand in players not posting record breaking scores. The course was in magnificent condition considering the drought we are facing and with high winds each day for the last week drying it out. Pictured below are two members of the winning team who triumphed with a score of 89 points, congratulations.

One of the fun features of this tournament is that teams select a country to represent and dress accordingly. Unfortunately this year it was not well supported so we need to rethink this for next year. Having said that there were two teams that made an effort, being the Swiss and the South African Teams. For their efforts both teams were given bottles of wine. Pictured below is the South African Team.

It seems Elvis’ Blue Suede Shoes are back in fashion as these three wannabees were seen having drinks in the Playas Bar on a Friday night. No prizes for guessing who these feet belong to, but have a go!

Friday 25 November is the next club draw so join us in the best pub in the Helderberg for drinks and the excitement of the draw. Remember to get your name into the draw by paying in your R100.00 at reception by the latest 17:00 on Friday. Stay on afterwards to sample Head Chef, Pierre’s new menu with a bottle of superb wine from our list.

Monday 5 December is our AGM. You are encouraged to attend as it is your opportunity to hear about the status of your club. Future plans/proposals will be tabled for discussion. New committee members will need to be voted on to serve you for the next period. It is also your opportunity to raise any issues you feel need addressing.

Saturday 10 December is the next major competition, The Captain’s Putter. This is an individual stableford competition. It’s an all-day event and please remember it is for members only. In the evening we are hosting our very first Captain’s Dinner and I hope that many of you will attend. It promises to be a fun evening with a French flair based on the war years styled Café’ restaurants featuring Danielle Pascal singing songs of the era such as Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Marlene Dietrich to name a few. Enjoy a fabulous four course menu of French cuisine designed by our very own Head Chef, Pierre. Please book early to avoid disappointment as this is going to be a night to remember.

Cheers for now
Dean

Knockout Rules

Greetings from Dean Tuesday, 15 November 2016

RE: Knockout Competitions

Dear Members,

With summer upon us it’s the start of the knockout matchplay competitions. In the past we have run into numerous challenges that we would like to address this year. One is the continual requests for deadline extensions. This causes loads of problems for our management team and players. If one person asks for an extension it might not be conducive to the other player/s and then we get into the situation where we have to make a call and give the non-offending player a walkover causing tension between management and players. If the extension is approved this has a snowball effect on the rest of the players as they are now rushing to complete the next round. This is not fair on those who have played by the rules of the competition. The other issue is that starting in mid-January makes the whole tournament very rushed so we’ll start earlier this year.

The rules for all the Knockout competitions this year are as follows.

• Enter the competition of choice by the closing date of Friday 25 November 2016
• There are set dates for each round and all games will be played on those dates with no extensions. See schedule below.
• All games will be played in the afternoon field
• In the event of extreme circumstance, if a player can’t make the assigned date that player will need to contact the Head Professional and ask for permission to play outside the designated date and give the reason for such a request. If approved, the next step is to ask the opponent to move the date BUT only before the assigned date. If that does not suit the opposing player, then the assigned date stands and a walk over will be given
• Once the draw has been made there’s no need for any player to make contact with their opponent or make any booking. This will be done by the bookings department.
• Under the rules of golf you may only play in one competition at a time so you may not play in the competition of the day when playing your knockout match.

The implementation of these new rules will make life easier for all concerned as you will know exactly which dates you are required to play. It will remove all contentious issues between players. It will also enable our management team to plan the rounds and finals. These are prestigious tournaments and we should give it due recognition and have all the finals played on the same day enabling spectators/supporters to watch. Obviously if a player is in multiple finals we will know ahead of time and plan accordingly.

I trust that you will give this your full support.

Best regards,
Dean Milbank

Congratulations to Petro Kruger on all her major tennis achievements

Greetings from Dean Wednesday, 02 November 2016

Dear Members,

I have quite a lot of exciting news to cover so apologies if this is a lot to read.

Golf Course
Our course is in stunning condition after the recent hollow-tining. There is only one small issue on the 7th fairway where it was attacked by the fusarium fungus. It is recovering well and will be up to standard in the next couple of weeks. Greg and his teamare to be congratulated on a superb job in ensuring that we have one, if not the best conditioned courses in the Western Cape.

Last week we hosted the Western Cape Pro-Am and the compliments we received by the professionals and amateurs alike was exceptional. This week, Greg hosted the green keepers annual meeting and all his peers had nothing but praise for the condition of the course and to coin a phrase, were green with envy. As of 1 November, there will be no placing except for the 7th fairway until it has fully recovered.

Tournaments
Firstly, to the ladies who had a good year. For the first time since Erinvale has played in the Silver Handicap Division of the WP league, they ended up tied in first place in their section on 12 points. This led to them playing against Milnerton at Strand GC on the 25 October in the quarter finals. Unfortunately, they lost this game but not without a good fight. Very well done to all the ladies who participated between January and October. They played with great spirit and enthusiasm and we are proud of their achievement. I am sure they will do us proud again next year.

The men have also done us proud by winning their section and only losing one game in the Harry Solomon league. Willem is to be congratulated in managing this side under trying conditions at times, in gathering a competitive team. Congratulations to all who played and flew the Erinvale flag high. Last Saturday we played in the first knockout round against Simonstown and unfortunately were eliminated. Simonstown have never lost a game at home so it was always going to be a tough match, and of all the teams in the draw, this is the one we did not like to get in round one. Anyway, well done to the team and better luck next year.

I would dearly love to enter a side into the Masters League. We had one in the past but it appears that we can’t get commitment from our low handicap players. We have enough talent to be there and compete, so if anyone feels like I do and would like to take on the challenge, please let me know.

Arbor Day Trophy
This was the brainchild of Harry Brews and this wonderful trophy was his design that he also paid for leaving his legacy for saving our trees. We were pleased that Lyn Brews was there to present the trophy to the winners pictured below.

Seeff Monthly Mixed
Last Sunday was the first of the Seeff sponsored days. We thank Keith & David Colley of Seeff for their continuous sponsorship of this monthly event. As with most sports, sponsorship plays an important role, so please support their business when their services are needed. This Sunday the weather was outstanding, the course was in great condition and fun was had by all. Unfortunately, the winners were not present but pictured below is the couple who came second.

Nick Penstone, Margot Penstone & David Colley

Members Competition Days
Your committee has discussed these at length over a few months and have come to the following decision. On a Thursday and Saturday, the competitions will be split into mornings and afternoons, so the morning prize giving will be done about thirty minutes after the last players are in, and likewise the afternoon prize giving will be thirty minutes after the last players are in. This will come into effect on 1 November and last for the summer season.

In winter, we will revert to one all day competition. There are a few reasons for this decision. Firstly, as you witnessed last Saturday there were only two people out of seven winners present, and clearly this is not good. Another issue is the weather conditions between morning and afternoon that can be significantly different, giving one or the other an advantage. This will not affect any majors that will still be all day events.

Monthly Club Draw
This is proving to be ever popular, and on Friday night there was an expectant buzz in Playa’s with standing room only. The attention and excitement was demonstrated by Nick Sloan who phoned me from the airport having just landed from overseas to see if he was entered and that he was on his way. All this before he even called his wife to say he was home.

The first draw at 18:00 was won by Brad Manson receiving R1,400.00. In true Brad fashion, he quickly calculated that it would get him 30 Double Jameson’s. The second draw at 18:30 worth R2,100.00 was won by Brigitte du Plessis. I was on a roll with both being in attendance, and what’s worse, both on the committee so the comments were flying around. At 19:00, I was not going to take the risk of pulling another committee member, or my name for that matter, so got Bill Jack to do the honours and, yes, we had a winner in the house, Shona Ferriman who pocketed R11,515.00

It was great to have all three winners in the house and the buzz was electric. I hope that this event will grow, but it will be up to you the member to make this happen. Remember, this is for your enjoyment and is only open to members of the golf club. You may bring guests to enjoy the atmosphere but they may not participate in the draw.

Achievements of Petro Kruger in European tennis tournaments and World championships for seniors.

Petro played a key role in the South African women’s over 70 team in the World Championship in Croatia at the end of September, to enable the team to finish 4th out of 12 teams in the completion. In the match against the French team (seeded no. 1) she beat the French number 1 in the singles, and with her partner also won the doubles, thus causing a major tournament upset by eliminating the French team during the play-off rounds - who were the favorites to win the tournament. Petro was also the key player to beat the Swedish team. Although Petro beat the English no.1, they lost the doubles match against England who won the competition for ladies over 70 this year.

In the individual world championships for seniors, held just after the team event in Croatia, Petro also did very well in the age group for over 70’s. She reached the semi-finals in the singles and both the finals of the doubles and mixed doubles.

Competing in various senior clay court tournaments in Europe this year, Petro won various titles in the over 70 categories at these tournaments:

In July:
Cognac: Won both the singles and ladies double titles.
Bordeaux: Won the mixed doubles and reached the semi-finals in the singles.
Amsterdam: Won the ladies doubles and reached the final of the singles

In October:
Major European tournament held in Majorca: Won the ladies doubles and reached the semi-finals of the singles.

Petro is to be congratulated for these fine achievements and we are proud that she is a member of Erinvale.

Staff
There have been many new appointments so I will be sending out a separate communication in the next week with their pictures and the positions they occupy, so you will know who you are talking to. At this point, I welcome them and wish them luck in their positions and hope that they will have a long and enjoyable career at Erinvale. Please extend a warm Erinvale reception to them.

Best regards,

Dean
