To a Term Well Served

CAPTAINS CHAT

Last week was our 19th AGM which was very well attended. Thanks must go to every member who attended in person or by proxy. This is your club and it is gratifying to see the interest you show.

To a Term Well Served
It also marked the end of Frank McDonogh’s term as Club Captain. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for the outstanding work and effort he has put into leading the club the last two years. It has not been without its challenges but with his dedication, together with the support of you and your committee, he has left the club in very good shape making my new role all that much easier.

At the AGM your new committee was voted in with some new faces making themselves available to serve and help in shaping the future of the club – I’d like to thank them on your behalf for all the time and hard work this will entail. I would also like to thank you all for giving me the opportunity to serve you as Club Captain for the next two years. It’s an honour and a privilege to accept this position and I promise to do everything in my power to maintain our position as one of the best golf clubs in the country. We want to give our members and visitors the most memorable golfing experience ever.

With the Erinvale team I will strive for continual improvement - as with any successful organisation doing nothing means going backwards and being overtaken by your competitors. Erinvale has an ageing population with an average age in the late sixty’s and if we do not make plans to attract the younger generation it will be very difficult to maintain what we currently enjoy. With this in mind your committee will be investigating all possibilities to achieve our goal of attracting new members. We will be working closely with the HOA and will present our findings to the members for consideration.

The culmination of my first week as your Club Captain was to host our last major of the year, the Captains Putter. This event was initiated in 1997 by our first Club Captain, Keith Colley. As is tradition I invited all Past Club Captains to participate on the day with nine able to accept. We had heavy rain fall during Friday night and early on Saturday morning that disrupted the early morning field but cleared in the late morning with super temperate weather for the rest of the day.

Pictured on the right are the Past Captain's participating in the Captain's Putter.

But with one of the worst droughts in history the rain was most welcome - we need every drop of moisture to sustain our beautiful golf course. Testament to the team, the course played very well even after such heavy rain.

Lou Rose won on a count out with Jim Almond on a superb score of 43 stableford points. Congratulations to all who participated to make the day a great success.

Pictured on the left are the 2015 Captain's Putter Winner, Lou Rose with
Keith Colley and Club Captain Dean Milbank

On Friday evening I hosted the Club’s Past Captains and their partners to dinner in the Legends Restaurant. This was a new initiative to thank them for their time in office and continued valuable advice in shaping our great club.

On behalf of the members may I put on record the Club’s appreciation for all they have done in the past.

We have a beautiful club, in a beautiful part of the world and my promise to every member is that I will celebrate and protect all that is wonderful about Erinvale and with your committee, diligently set about changing all that needs improving!

Past Captain's Dinner

This is most likely the last communication of the year so all that remains is for me to wish all of you and your families a merry festive season and for those travelling come back safely.

Regards,
Dean Milbank

Another Year Gone By
It’s my last newsletter for the year and I want to send out a special thank you to you, our valued golfer. Thank you for being part of our community and for supporting us this year. It’s been inspiring to see you enjoying your golf.

Now is the time to ask yourself some key questions about your golf in 2015. Did you get in as much golf as you wanted to this year? What was it that stopped you playing more golf in 2015? And is there anything we can do to help you to get out on the course more often? Was your golf up to the standard you wanted in 2015? Did you set yourself improvement targets and did you reach them? Or, for some reason, did you experience a decline in the standard of your golf?

Contact me about making 2016 the best golf year ever. In the meantime I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and please travel safely.

Regards,

Gavin

ADVIES VAN ONS PROS

As the game is getting more and more scientific, players are fighting the ever-constant battle to try to keep up. Getting your equipment checked can be an expensive thing but there are small things you can get checked to see if the clubs you are using are correct.

We sometimes forget how important the lie angle of the club is. If your lie is not setup correctly at setup position, you can make the best swing possible and the ball will not go straight.

Let me explain the lie angle of the club: it is how the club sits on the ground at address. We want the toe of the club to be slightly off the ground sitting up, and you should be able to fit a 50 cent coin under the toe of the club on address. The reason for this is how the shaft reacts during the golf swing. On the downswing your shaft bends, but not in the way many of us think, it actually presses the toe of the club down. So if your club is flat on the ground at address, your toe of the club will hit the ground first at impact, due to the way the shaft bends and will cause the clubface to open at impact and the ball will go right of target. So in this case your club lie angle is too flat for you and then vice versa is also true. When the toe is too far off the ground at address the heel of the club will hit the ground first at impact causing the clubface to close and the ball will go left of target.

This may sound very technical but it is an easy thing to get tested. You can have the best golf swing in the world but if your clubs lie angles are not setup correctly for you, it will not go straight.

To get your clubs tested, come see us. All our PGA Professionals at Swingfit will be able to help you and make the best recommendations for you.

DIRECTOR'S REPORT

Photo of the Week:
Unfortunately this week’s photo is not a great one.

This particular photo was taken on a Saturday, where a member played out the bunker and never raked his/her footprints.

When it comes to bunkers, it is part of etiquette to leave the bunker in the same if not better condition than how you found it.

On Wednesday it was the return match between Erinvale and Somerset West, hosted at Somerset West. As per July the teams are made up of 10 men and 6 ladies in a betterball format with the pairing with the least amount of points being removed from each side.

Congratulations to Somerset West on their victory to level the series and we look forward to hosing them next year with intention in taking the trophy back.

AGM
A reminder that on the 7th December 2015 is the Club’s AGM!
With regards to the AGM pack that was sent out, please take note that points 4 on the information pack were it mentions ‘proposed change to the constitution’ is an error and is to be ignored.

GPS on Golf Carts
This week we are very pleased to announce that GPS have been installed onto the Club’s Golf Carts. These units will add tremendous value to the golf experience and we hope you will all enjoy them. With the GPS being installed there is an adjustment to the rental rates for members for 18 holes will increase from R200 to R225 and Non-Members the rate will increase from R310 to R350 effective 1st December 2015.

Check-in Procedure
Over the past weeks we have been noticing that golfers are not all checking into the pro shop before golf and in addition not handing the starter your player voucher.

It is a vital part of the controls that all golfers register with both the pro shop and starter before any game of golf.
We thank you in advance for your understanding and support.

During their time as always there are a few Annual Challenge games that take place namely Scotties vs Eagles and Erinvale vs Scotties in a Friendship Cup.

Staff Movement
Over the past few months we have had a few shifts in staff personal and I would like to keep the members informed as to who is new and in what capacity they are responsible for.

Functions and Membership:
Kayleigh Basset decided to move on a few months ago and with her position being a vital role, we decided not to rush into the appointment, but rather find the right person and in the interim we appointed Janine Gous who has just completed her Events Management Diploma based at Lourensford in an intern capacity.

She has been incredible in her managing of our events in a professional ,but we always knew that she would be moving on from the 13th December, so in the meantime we have been searching for the right person and we are happy to announce and welcome to the team Venette Wolmarans who started in November. In the past 2 weeks she has been receiving handovers from the team and getting to understand the business and we are confident that she will a great asset to Erinvale.

We wish them both the best of luck and much success.

Janine Gous

Venette Wolmarans

Chef:
Chef Rufus Peterson decided to move on to find new challenges in September, and we thank him for his dedicated time at Erinvale over the years.

Saying that, we welcome Erinvale’s new Head Chef Roger Hindley. Since his appointment he has been able to bring new life to the Catering team and with the positive feedback we have been receiving from his new a la Carte Menu and function food we believe we have the right man for the job and we wish him and his team the best of luck and success.

Roger Hindley A bit about Roger:
Born and raised in the Helderberg Area. After completing my studies at Protea Technical College I started my career as Jnr Chef De partie at Erinvale Hotel under the leadership of Chef Micheal Bridgemen.I had the opportunity to experience working in Ireland during this time. I spend some time at Erinvale Hotel and worked my way up to Sous Chef.

Leaving Erinvale I had the privilege to work with international Chefs and well know Establishments like Lanzarac Hotel, The Lacaron Hotel and The Commodore Hotel.

At the age of 28 I got my first opportunity to head up a kitchen at Morgenhof wine Estate with the well known French family Mr and Mrs Cointreau. After spending 4 years with Morgenhof I got head hunted by Zorgvliet Wine Estate. Here I was running the Zorgvliet Property and the Kaingo Game reserve in Limpopo. With Zorgvliet I got a lot of media exposure with Top Billing and Pasella.

I’m also trained in the art of Charcuterie and spend some time with the well know Charcutier Steve Jeffery running The Bistro at Blaauwklippen.
