Another fantastic Ted Perkins Centenary Trophy!

CAPTAIN'S CHAT

Greetings,

Wow! What a rain storm we had this week with 97mm falling in a short space of time. The 1st dam is full to the brim along with most of the others. Just what we needed, not only for the course but the dams in the Cape as well. This much rain has its pitfalls with the damage it causes to the bunkers but we will not complain.

Saturday the 23rd of July saw the Ted Perkins Centenary Trophy being played. What a wonderful event in honour of our celebrated member.

Ted turned 102 on the 21st July and unfortunately could not be at the prize giving as his daughter had arranged a combined birthday party as she shares the same birth date.

He did pop into the club before the afternoon tee off for a beer and a chat. I persuaded him to have a picture taken with the trophy he donated.

It is a beautiful solid oak clock in perfect working order that he handmade at the age of 100,outstanding!

The day was made special with a fourball of his fellow Coots (James Ford, Bill Jack, Ian Burton &Charles Scott) trying to win the trophy for Ted. Great fellowship and what Erinvale is all about. Well done to the winners pictured below!

On Monday morning we held our annual Staff Golf Day. This is where we say thank you to the staff that help make Erinvale what it is, and is only fitting that they get to play the course they put all their effort into. It is not a lot of fun getting up at 04:00 to get to Erinvale in time to get the course ready for us to play at 07:00, especially in winter and driving rain. We owe thanks the entiregreens staff for their dedication.

This also holds true to the clubhouse staff who also have to get up early to be ready to serve us coffee and breakfast. There was a very jovial atmosphere at prize giving and everyone had a great time. Thanks also to the ladies of Erinvale who donated many prizes, wonderful generosity. It is these small but caring things that make me proud to be the Captain of Erinvale.

Another record breaking weekend!

Greetings from Erinvale Friday, 22 July 2016

CAPTAIN'S CHAT

Greetings,

What a winter we are experiencing from cold wet and windy days to almost summer conditions. Thankfully the dams are filling up nicely and what a pleasure to see them full. So far the wet weather has not disrupted our golf too much and from what I am hearing it is better than the “summer’ being experienced overseas. See winter is not that bad here in the fairest Cape after all!

We have had a busy week with lots to report on so here goes.

Last Friday we had a superb evening in the Playa’s Bar to introduce our new Executive Chef, Juan Neethling, and he showed off his expertise with some outstanding canape’s. The bar & lounge were packed and there was an atmosphere reminiscent of the Erinvale of old. The mood was enhanced with a one-man band who provided a good range of songs that got some of the old dancers, like the Almond’s and Hart’s, giving it a twirl. Dare I say “we are back”. We will be doing some exciting new events on selected Friday nights so watch this space.

Also on Friday night we recognized one of the most important members of staff, our Head Greenkeeper, Greg Leckie, who celebrated his 10th anniversary at Erinvale in May this year. Without his expertise and dedication we would not have this magnificent and internationally recognized golf course. Words can’t express the gratitude we feel and owe him. It is not an easy task especially when you have no control over the elements. To show our appreciation we presented him with a picture of his favourite hole, the 15th, framed with the Erinvale flag on which a message was written and signed by Gary Player. See picture alongside.

Thank you Greg, you make a Captain’s life that much easier and here’s to your next ten years at Erinvale.

Brad Manson winning the Claret Jug Saturday morning dawned with perfect weather for Erinvale’s Claret Jug competition – launched last year to coincide with The Open Championship. This year we moved it to the Saturday with a 10:00 shotgun start. This proved to be very successful and the atmosphere at prize giving was fantastic. I was fortunate to play with the winner, Brad Manson, who demonstrated enormous powers of concentration and courage as he was not very well on the day and at times could hardly make it up the slopes onto the tee boxes. His winning score of 39 points was fantastic considering he had no points on holes 9 & 18. Needless to say he celebrated by filling the Claret Jug with Jameson and went round the room giving everyone a sip.

Congratulations to all the members who participated to make it a very special day.

We had another remarkable round of golf last Saturday. The competition was an Alliance Medal 1 score to count - the gentlemen pictured alongside shot an incredible 50 net. I know you can all count but this is 22 under par. On the day they won by 11 shots. I have made contact with a number of notable golfing people to find out if this is some kind of record and none of them have ever heard of a score like this.

And I hear complaints that the course is too difficult!! Congratulations gentlemen.

That’s all for now and best wishes.

Last Saturday we had our inaugural Winter Club Championships

CAPTAIN'S CHAT

Greetings

Winter has definitely arrived with the morning temperatures in the low single digit figures and frost. We have also had our first snowfall last week. We still need much more rain so we are all praying that it's just late in arriving.

Last Saturday we had our inaugural Winter Club Championships

The day started out very cold but warmed up nicely during the day for perfect golfing weather. The course was in superb condition with the greens running true and fast. A big thank you to Greg and his team for their continued effort in keeping our magnificent golf course in peak condition despite the weather challenges.

While the field was small with quite a few people withdrawing at the last minute those that participated had a good day. Thank you to all those who participated and made it a wonderful event. We tried a few new things that we will learn from for next years competition.

Thank you to Gavin and his team for a well run day. The one tee start with grab & go at halfway made for good pace of play.

We had playoffs in both the Men's Championship and B Divisions with both only needing one extra hole, the 18th, to decide the winners. Congratulations to all the winners.

Winter Champion: Marc Dukes

Ladies Winter Champion: Tallie de Wet

Men's B Division Champion: Stuart Downs

Men's C Division Champion: Fanie Lategan

Ladies Bronze Champion: Margot Penstone

Cheers for now,

Dean
